Getting to Australia from Cape Town is about to become easier. Qantas has announced its first-ever non-stop flights between Cape Town and Sydney, giving travellers a direct connection between the two cities.

Three flights a week from October 2027

The seasonal service is scheduled to launch on 19 October 2027, with three flights a week on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Flights will operate on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft and take approximately 14 hours and 25 minutes.

The service will run until 24 March 2028, adding almost 30,000 seats between Australia and South Africa during its first season.

A more direct connection between South Africa and Australia

For travellers, the biggest draw is being able to skip the connecting flights that have traditionally been part of the journey. Until now, getting from Cape Town to Sydney has generally meant travelling through Johannesburg or another international hub.

The announcement also comes as travel between the two countries continues to grow. More than 120,000 Australians visited South Africa in 2025, while almost 225,000 South African-born people now live in Australia.

Qantas has a long history in South Africa, having first introduced scheduled passenger flights to the country in 1952. The airline currently serves Johannesburg, making Cape Town its second South African destination.

For the Western Cape, the new route could make the region more accessible to Australian visitors while giving local travellers a simpler way to reach Sydney. The flights are subject to regulatory approval, with return economy fares reportedly starting at around R20,499.

Fares are subject to change and may vary depending on availability, booking dates and travel periods. Travellers are encouraged to check Qantas’ official website for the latest prices before booking.
